PURPOSE:To let both the simplification of a structure for a pinion rotation restraining mechanism and the facilitation of manufacture be realized, and concurrently let the enhancement of durability and miniaturization be also realized. CONSTITUTION:A starter motor drives a drive shaft 166 via one-way clutches 179, 180 and 173, and a pinion gear 181 as a single body is brought into spline engagement with the drive shaft 166. An electromagnetic switch drives a stopper (spring member) 187 through a stopper drive mechanism 165 so as to let the stopper be engaged with a pinion gear 181. Since the rotation of the pinion gear 181 is restrained by an engagement with the stopper 187 regardless of the rotation of the drive shaft 166, the pinion gear 181 is advanced along a helical spline groove 178 so as to be meshed with a ring gear 39. The stopper 187 controls the backward movement of the pinion gear 181 meshed with the ring gear 39. |
