PURPOSE:To easily produce a diol such as 1,6-hexanediol from an esterified carboxylic acid mixture separated from an oxidation reaction liquor of cyclohexane by carrying out the hydrogenative decomposition of the ester with hydrogen in the presence of a chromium-free catalyst having excellent activity and filterability. CONSTITUTION:A diol is produced from a carboxylic acid mixture separated from an oxidation reaction liquor of cyclohexane by esterifying the mixture with an alcohol and carrying out the hydrogenative decomposition of the produced ester with hydrogen. In this process, the hydrogenative decomposition of the ester is carried out in the presence of a catalyst produced by mixing an aqueous solution containing a soluble copper salt and a soluble zinc salt with an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal carbonate or an alkali metal bicarbonate at 60-95 deg.C and pH 6.5-9.0 and baking the obtained basic carbonate containing copper and zinc at 300-450 deg.C. |
