PURPOSE:To obtain a polyether compound having narrow addition molar number distribution and high quality by carrying out an alkylene oxide addition reaction of an alcohol having low reactivity using a specific high-performance catalyst exhibiting sufficiently high activity even at a low temperature. CONSTITUTION:This polyether compound (having an average alkylene oxide addition molar number of 1-10) is produced by using a quaternary ammonium salt expressed by formula I (R<1> and R<2> each is a 1-20C alkyl, an aralkyl or an aryl; X is COOH or a 1-20C fatty acid residue) as a catalyst and reacting an aliphatic mono or polyhydric alcohol with an alkylene oxide under a pressure of about 0.5-10kg/cm<2> at about 40-90 deg.C. The quaternary ammonium salt to be used as the catalyst is especially preferably a compound of formula II (R<1> to R<4> each is a 1-20C alkyl, an aralkyl or an aryl), e.g. tetramethylammonium hydroxide, tetraethylammonium hydroxide and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide. |
