During speed change, the controller 9 obtains the variation quantity per calculation cycle of the engine revolution speed detected by a sensor 13, and the excess/ shortage of the tightening capacity of a frictional element is judged on the basis of the gradient of the variation quantity of the engine revolution speed in the vicinity of the instant when the variation quantity of the engine revolution speed changes from positive to negative, at the final stage within the first set time which covers the region from the speed change instruction to the start of speed change, and the line pressure is learning-controlled so as to be set at the proper value.
