The cordierite-zirconia composite having good toughness is prepared by (a) mixing ultrafine silica powder suspension solution, boehmite powder suspension solution and zirconia sol suspension solution to be composed of 70-93.5 wt% cordierite and 6.5-30.0 wt% zirconia, (b) controlling pH to be 3-6 and gelating the mixed solution by mixing magnesium nitrate aqueous solution, (c) filtering, drying the gelated suspension solution and calcinating the dried body at 800-1,100 deg.C, pulverizing, drying and molding it, (d) sintering the molded body at 1,250-1,320 deg.C with the heating rate of 7-15 deg.C/min for 1-2 hrs.
