There are disclosed methods and apparatuses for the continuous treatment of a liquid to remove one or more contaminants therefrom and to recover the contaminants in a concentrated form achieved through the use of a modified screw tube reactor. By creating specific zones within the modified reactor for contaminant uptake, contaminant concentration, contaminant removal and medium washing, the entire liquid treatment procedure (i.e., removal of contaminant from the liquid and recovery thereof in a concentrated form) may be completed in a single screw tube unit. Moreover, the contaminant is recovered in a much more highly concentrated form than heretofore possible. Regeneration of the medium for recirculation through the system may be effected either in a separate regeneration unit or, in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, in the screw tube reactor itself. |
