Medical device for use in diagnostic and surgical endoscopy, comprises an insufflation path (4, 5, 6) for injecting a neutral gas into a surgical cavity (2), in conjunction with a pressurized neutral gas source, and a flow control pilot valve provided in said path. A means (18) for measuring the insufflation pressure (Pi) is provided at the beginning of the injection path (4, 5, 6). The pressure within the cavity (Pa) is calculated based on the insufflation pressure (P), by evaluating the load loss in the path. A comparison is made between the calculated pressure within the cavity (Pa) and the flow control valve (13) is guided as a fuction of the result of the comparison with the set value. The apparatus hence provides a minimum continuous neutral gas flow (D) to closely compensate the gas leaks occurring outside of the surgical cavity (2).
