The hot-rolling operation for steel slabs improves the pressing of slab with by setting an edger roll gap. The hot-rolling operation comprises: (A) controlling width rolling reduction of the first pass based on the load distribution of the edger roll; (B) calculating width rolling reduction of each pass from the final desired width of the slab; and (C) setting the edger roll gap using width rolling reduction, slab width and elastic recovery.
