An apparatus for positioning and moving a flexible element formed into a loop (17) mounted on a pair of positioning handles (15, 16). The loop (17) is mounted on the two handles (15, 16) so as to be movable relative to the handles (15, 16) and to form a working segment (36) of the element between corresponding one free end of the handles (15, 16). The apparatus could be used in dental flossing, laparoscopic surgery or as a cutting or abrading device.
