A frequency command value is determined arthmetically based on an angular speed command signal and a measured torque current component value of the electromotor's primary current. A command value for an amplitude value of the primary voltage of the motor is determined together with a command value for an internal phase angle between the primary voltage and an induced e.m.f. arthimetically based on at least the frequency command value and the measured torque current component.The instantaneous command value for the primary voltage is determined arithmetically using the command value signal. The output voltage of the frequency converter is controlled using the instantaneous command value for the primary voltage
