A method and apparatus for loading articles to be transported into a transport space. In this method, articles (14) are loaded onto a transfer plate (2) that is outside the transport space (13) and can be pushed inside the transport space (13) through a fully open side of the transport space (13), after which the articles (14) are transferred into the transport space (13) by pushing the transfer plate inside along the bottom of the transport space (13), and the articles (14) are supported on the open side and the transfer plate (2) is pulled out from between the bottom of the transport space (13) and the articles. The apparatus comprises a body (1), an insertable transfer plate (2) which moves along a shaft of the body (1) and which can be pushed outside along the bottom of the transport space (13) through the open side, the articles to be transported being loaded onto the plate; and transfer means for transferring the transfer plate (2) and the articles (14) into the transport space and for pulling the transfer plate (2) out from between the bottom of the transport space (13) and the articles (14).
