Vehicle engine oil consumption measurement and warning

The system for oil consumption measurement and display of consumption versus distance travelled consists of a switching oil level indicator (2), measurement sensor (5) and an evaluation circuit (4) which uses information on the oil sump geometry, distance travelled and engine operating parameters to evaluate the oil use profile. Significant engine operating parameters acquired include oil temperature, oil temperature surges. Excessive oil consumption is indicated on the display (3) and/or a hand-held tester (6).
