The device proposed has a piston (2) which can be inserted into the cylinder (1) under examination and which has at least two radial bores (5) in each of which an electrically inductive travel sensor (8) is mounted on a support element (6) such that it can move relative to the piston (2). The support elements (6) are attached to the piston (2) near the axis (11) of the piston and the signal lines (9) for the individual travel sensors (8) are connected to a measurement and processing unit.
