<p>A method and a control device (9) for controlling the authenticity of identity documents and valuable documents (42), wherein the document includes an image of the owner (44) of the identity document or an image of a pattern significant to the valuable document (42), for instance a banknote pattern. The scanning principle is based on dividing an image (44) into sub-areas (50, 52) which include a number of pixels (54) for an optical device (26). The control device (9) digitalizes pixel information in the form of reflected light intensities and chooses a number of sub-areas (52) for an authenticity check in a database with corresponding sub-areas (52) of a registered original document. The selection of sub-areas (52) for comparison purposes speeds-up the authenticity check. An authenticity check results in a measurement of the reliability of a document. The control device (9) is also used to register a document that has not yet been registered.</p> |
