Prodn. of twisted yarn comprises drawing two roving yarns (a; a') from stock, leading them through a drafting system, spinning them independently in a ring spinning process and winding them onto two spun yarn bodies (16; 16') on hollow spindles (3; 3') arranged one over the other on permanent brackets. In a second, following stage, the spun-yarn ends having previously been parted from the drafted roving yarn, each spun yarn is again detached from the balloon-shaped spun-yarn body and fed through a hollow spindle axis (4; 4'), but both being fed through the lower spindle together to a winding device (17). The hollow spindles are set to rotate at a rate dependent on the detachment speed of the winding device so that both yarns are at least partly wound back. Also claimed is an appts for the implementation of the process comprising sets, arranged one above the other, of ring-spinning frames with bracket-mounted spindle rails (2; 2') set with bearings to take the hollow spindles (3; 3') and underneath all the winding device (17). The drive to the spindles is conveyed via a belt (10, 10') to a wharf (5; 5') to set rotational speeds in predetermined relationship to one another and, at each hollow spindle, a ring (11; 11') and its traveller (12; 12') is allowed to move up and down.
