The brake device is for a rail vehicle with a block brake system. On the inner edge of the wheel of the rail vehicle is fastened a brake ring (1). The brake lining (7) is so arranged such that it works against the circumferential surface (6) of the brake ring. The outer diameter (4) of the brake ring is smaller than the running circular diameter of the wheel. The brake ring material is the same material as the wheel or is of a material of similar appearance. The outer radius of the brake ring can be at least 4cm smaller than the radius of the wheel perimeter.
