The mfr. of a low expansion lithium aluminosilicate honeycomb body comprises (i) compounding lithium aluminosilicate glass powder and a clay additive; (ii) extruding the batch through a honeycomb die; and (iii) drying and firing to produce a low expansion body which has a thermal expansion coefft. of below 15 x 10-7/[deg]C between room temp. and 800[deg]C, and a principal crystal phase composed of beta-spondumene solid soln. The clay additive is aluminosilicate clay as 2-30 wt.% of the solids of the batch or is kaolinitic clay as 5-20 wt.% of the solids. The compsn. of the glass powder is (wt.%) 4.9-7.1 Li2O, 6.5-22 Al2O3, 72-86 SiO2 and 0-2 TiO2; the solids of the batch have the compsn. 3.5-7.5 Li2O, 15-30 Al2O3, 65-85 SiO2 and 0-3 TiO2, and the Al2O3:Li2O mole ratio is 1-1.5. The firing temp. of the body is at least sufficient to crystallise the clay and powdered glass. |
