Diverter and volume control valve

A shower control valve assembly includes a mixing valve cartridge in a casing having at least one outlet for transporting mixed water to a bath tub and a diverter passage connected to the outlet for transporting mixed water to a shower. An insert 62 positioned in the outlet includes a counterweighted butterfly valve member 64 which is normally in an open position allowing water to flow to the tub. A rod 66 extends laterally of the insert and is reciprocable so as to contact the upstream wing of the valve member and force it into the stream of water flowing to the tub. The stream forces the valve member to a closed position and then the flowing water is forced to flow to the shower. When the water is turned off, the counterweight returns the valve member to its open condition. The rod 66 is rotatable and cooperates with appropriate means in the insert to effectively throttle water flowing to the shower to act as a volume control therefor.
