A core barrel system consists of an outer core barrel (2), an inner core barrel (3) formed from a number of tubular members (4a, 4b) coupled together by female nuts (7), support formations (13) which extend into the inner core barrel (3), and a core receiving liner made up of a number of tubes (14a, 14b) mounted end to end within the inner core barrel (3) on the support formations (13) which extend to support the core receiving liner against longitudinal movement relative to the inner core barrel. The suport formations (13) may be split rings in order to facilitate the insertion of shear plates into a core sample whilst minimising movement of the liner relative to the sample. The liner may be provided with apertures in order to help allow any excess pressure of gas from the core sample to be released. |
