PURPOSE:To obtain alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid amide industrially and advantageously by extremely improving a catalytic life of manganese dioxide. CONSTITUTION:In producing alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid amide by reacting acetone cyanhydrin with water in a liquid phase, the reaction is carried out in the presence of alpha type manganese dioxide prepared by a method for adsorbing a vanadium compound on the surface of alpha type manganese dioxide and not treating the alpha type manganese dioxide with an alkali after the adsorption, having adsorbed the vanadium compound on the surface in the atomic ratio of vanadium element to manganese element of 0.001-0.04 to provide the objective method for producing alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid amide.
