APPARATUS AND METHOD OF DETECTING OBJECT ABOUT VEHICLE

PURPOSE:To prevent collision with an obstacle by detecting a distance to the obstacle and the direction on the rear side of a vehicle and the results are displayed being superimposed on own vehicle with an onboard display to allow an operator to recognize a positional relationship between the own vehicle and the obstacle. CONSTITUTION:The distance to and direction of obstacles 5 and 6 existing on the rear side of an own vehicle 3 are detected with a radar 1 and the outline of the obstacles is displayed with an onboard display 2 being superimposed on the outline of the own vehicle 3. A display range is altered with an indicator 7. When the obstacles 5 and 6 enter into a warning range 9, an alarm sound is generated from an alarm device. This allows an operator to recognize a positional relationship between the own vehicle and the obstacles clearly by showing the outlines of the obstacles 5 and 6 and the own vehicle 3 thereby making possible the preventing of collision.
