The assembly includes first and second earring studs (39) and a stud retaining sub-assembly (30) for releasably supporting the studs (39). A clutch retaining sub-assembly (40) releasably supports a first and second clutch (47) to respectively retain a first or a second stud (39) on a earlobe after the stud (39) has pierced the earlobe whilst being driven by a push rod (90). The push rod (90) is mounted along with sub-assemblies (30 and 40) on a housing. A keeper (116) is provided for selectively moving push rod (90) between a first position for ejecting the first stud (39) from sub-assembly (30) and a second position for ejecting the second stud from sub-assembly (30).
