摘要 Polymers containing aromatic nuclei are cross-linked by reaction with an aralkyl halide comprising at least two halogenomethyl groups (other than fluoromethyl groups) each attached to an aromatic nucleus, to eliminate hydrogen halide whereby an intractable, crosslinked polymer is produced with the remaining part of the aralkyl halide cross-linked directly between aromatic nuclei in the polymer. Polymers may be obtained in two stages by first partially polymerizing a monomer containing an aromatic nucleus with the aralkyl halide, and then cross-linking the product of the first stage with the same or a different aralkyl halide. In examples, cross-linked polymers are obtained by reacting p-dichloroxylylene or dichloromethyl mesitylene with a polybenzyl resin obtained from benzyl chloride, 2-phenyl-dibenzothiophene, a polyester obtained from ethylene glycol and terephthallic acid, a silicone resin obtained from diphenyl silane diol, a mixture of terphenyls, octaphenyl cyclotetrasiloxane, ferrocene, dibenzothiophene, phenanthrene, N-triphenyl borazole, B-methyl N - triphenyl borazole, B - phenyl N - triphenyl borazole and triphenylene; in some instances stannic chloride is used as a catalyst. Other polymers mentioned that may be crosslinked are polyphenyls and polystyrenes.ALSO:Fibrous materials, e.g. glass cloth and asbestos fibre mat, are impregnated with polymers containing aromatic nuclei which are then cross-linked by reaction with an aralkyl halide comprising at least two halogenomethyl groups (other than fluoromethyl groups) each attached to an aromatic nucleus. The materials may be impregnated with a solution containing the polymer and aralkyl halide, and heated to cure the polymer, after evaporation of the solvent. In examples asbestos felt and glass cloth are impregnated with a polybenzyl resin obtained from benzyl chloride, with octaphenyl cyclotetrasiloxane, with a resin obtained from N-triphenyl borazole and p-dichloroxylylene, and with a resin obtained from triphenylene and p-dichloroxylylene, and the polymers are cross-linked by reaction with p-dichloroxylylene.
