A mounting ring 30, Fig. 8, for supporting a lighting fitting in a ceiling is secured to a horizontal supporting bar (not shown) by means of a clip 72 comprising a base 74 connected by flanges 76 to wings 78. The base has a tongue 84 struck outwardly therefrom for attaching the clip to a T-shaped boss 38 on the ring, and the flanges 76 are set at a small angle, e.g. 20 degrees, to the base and extend inwardly. The wings diverge outwardly and are formed with corresponding slots 80 so mutually arranged that each slot is one quarter of an inch above or below another. The wings are squeezed together manually until they are parallel to allow a supporting bar to be inserted through a suitable pair of slots, and are then released so that they grip the bar in the required position. The bar is subsequently attached to a ceiling structure. The provision of a series of spaced slots 80 enables the position of the ring 30 relative to the ceiling to be adjusted, and further adjustment may be made available by cutting notches one-eighth of an inch deep in the ends of the supporting bar so that its level relative to the ceiling structure can be varied. Clamps. The rim of a lighting fitting is supported on the ring 30 by means of a clip 302, Fig. 19, having a first downwardly facing U-shaped portion 308 adapted to straddle the ring and a second upwardly facing U-shaped portion 314 adapted to receive the rim. A screw 316 engaging depressed tongues 318 in the portion 308 extends into the second U-shaped portion to clamp the rim therein. The arm 306 is adapted to be received in a slot 42 (not shown) in the ring, downward movement being limited by bent-out tines 310. Hinges. A lamp cover plate 114, Fig. 13, is hingedly supported on the ring 30 by means of a leaf 146 slidable vertically in a slot 48 in the ring and provided with an inwardly directed slotted tongue 148 receiving a hinge pin 152 carried by a yoke 154 attached to the plate. The tongue 148 can slide along the pin 152 to enable the plate to be rotated relative to the ring to engage or disengage its fastenings, and a tongue 156 bent out from the leaf limits the downward movement of the plate.
