A super-conductive gating device has two parallel shield conductors each having at least its inner face formed of super-conductive material having aligned between them and parallel thereto a control conductor of hard super-conductive material and at least one gate conductor positioned adjacent one of the shield conductors and having at least one portion of its length formed from soft super-conductive material. Figs. 1, 1aillustrate a typical case, having control conductor 14 spaced a distance T from one shield conductor and a gate conductor containing a soft super-conductive portion 12A at distance S from the other shield conductor. Fig. 1billustrates a curve 21 of gate current against control current, the super-conducting and resistive state being below and above the curve. It can be seen that provided the slope of the curve at the point Ice is greater than 45‹, an operating point a can be chosen such that the state of the super-conductor can be taken around the square abcdand that a current gain can be obtained, i.e. that the change I 1 in gate current can be greater than the change I 3 in control current. The Specification states that such a condition is possible if T>S. The standing current I c may always be present in the control conductor or in a separate biasing conductor, Fig. 2 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 3, the gate conductor has two portions 12, 26 symmetrically placed about the control conductor 14. This arrangement avoids mutual inductance between gate and control conductors thereby improving the response time. Current gains is again possible if T > S. In a further arrangement, Fig. 4, the gate conductors are closer to the control conductor than to the shields. This arrangement is said to have a characteristic similar to Fig. 1b,but with the maximum on the other side of the Ig axis so that the device may be operated with current gain with the currents in control conductor 14A and gate conductor 12A flowing in the same direction. By then moving the return gate conductor, Fig. 5, further from the control conductor regenerative coupling between gate and control conductors may be achieved. In all the drawings T must be greater than S for current gain. The hard super-conductor may be lead and the soft super-conductor tin or indium.
