The endoscope comprises a probe (1) with a longitudinal opening connected to a guide sheath (2) with an eyepiece (5) and optical system which can be moved axially through the guide tube (2) giving a line of sight through the longitudinal opening in the probe. The axial position of the optical system is controlled by a drive mechanism (3) connected to the guide tube (2) and is operated by hand. The instrument can be held in one hand by a single operator while the optical system is securely located in the appropriate position. The operator is able to use a surgical instrument with his free hand.
