In the heating of the press band of a press (1), the gaseous pressure medium, for example air, is admixed with water vapour before being introduced into the pressure chamber (5), and the water vapour/air mixture is applied to the rear of the press band in the region of the pressure chamber (5), the water vapour in the zone adjacent to the inlet condensing completely or partially on the relatively cold rear of the press band.
