The airbag system is provided with a holder with its upper section forming a gas discharge opening. A gas producer is fitted inside the holder, and an airbag is attached on the upper section of the holder so that gas from the gas producer flows through the discharge opening into the bag if the gas producer is activated. A retaining plate is located between the gas producer and airbag to provide support for the airbag in its folded state.
