Multi-cylinder motor exhaust system

The exhaust system for a multi-cylinder motor has a catalyst (10) in the exhaust channel (9) for one group (3) of cylinders (2), and a further catalyst (13) in the exhaust channel (12) from a second group (5) of cylinders (4). A bypass (16) is between the exhaust channels (9,12). An adjustable barrier (15) is after the first catalyst (10) to give a free passage when the second group (5) of cylinders (4) are switched on, and blocks the passage at least partially when the second group (5) of cylinders (4) are switched off.
