Passenger lift control method with detection of approach of customers

The presence of intending passengers on a floor around the entrance to the lift is signalled by a sensor which ensures that the gates are held open, or reopened, to allow access to the lift. In the absence of waiting customers on a floor, the lift in motion is allowed to pass without stopping unless a command to stop has been issued by a passenger within. The sensor may be an infrared movement detector, pressure mat, contact detector, weigh-scale or optical barrier.
