The power operated stapling or tacking tool can be mounted at the end of a robot arm that is programmed to insert staples (2) at fixed locations. The tool is powered by fluid pressure (P) applied to a piston (1). Built into the piston assembly is a piezo electric force sensor (8) that provides an input to a control computer. A force-time characteristic is stored as knowledge base data and the measured signal is compared with this and a signal generated to control the cycle. As an alternative, the force measurement may be based upon measuring, a pressure drop into the piston chamber.
