FASTENER AND TENSIONER FOR BONE SECURING CABLE

A bone cable strap (20) and surgical instruments that pass the cable strap around a bone, tension it, fasten it and trim the excess cable. The surgical instruments include: A cable passer (22) to guide the cable (20) around the bone; a cable tensioner (24) having concentric tubular members (80, 82) with a cable clamp (86) at one end, a nipple (98) at the other end, and a handle (84) in between such that turning the handle (84) spreads the cable clamp away from the nipple (98); and a combination cable crimper/cutter (26) to crimp and cut the cable (20) once in place about the bone. An alternative embodiment of the cable tensioner (240) has a removable nipple (324) which may be clamped to the cable (20) to temporarily hold a cable around the bone so that the tensioner (240) may be attached to a second nipple to tension a second cable. The cable strap (20) is comprised of a flexible cable (30) having a fastener (32) pre-affixed to one end.
