The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for the labelling, identification and verification of motor vehicles. The object of the invention, of proposing a user-friendly solution which when used on vehicle-mounted computers, identification data carriers and display elements which are known per se makes the misuse of a vehicle much more difficult, is achieved according to the invention in that at least one electronic identification (1) which is provided with display elements (8) whose contents can be changed in a prescribable way is provided, the said identification (1) itself containing an electronic storage element (4) with a plurality of items of vehicle-specific identification data, the said storage element (4) is connected to the vehicle-mounted computer (8) in which a comparison for identity of these items of data with identification data stored in it and with identification data of a separate data carrier (12), which can be input via the data input device (10), takes place.
