A thermostat of the type comprising a plastics case with a body (1, 2) for the inlet and outlet of a fluid and a thermostatic element (19) adapted to expand under the effect of an increase in temperature and to move another component such as a valve member (26) against the force of a restoring spring (24). The case comprises a first part (1) of tubular form in which the thermostatic element (19) is positioned, and a second part which is separated from the first part until the two parts are assembled. The first part (1) has arms (7) which retain the spring (24) until the parts are assembled and the second part (2) has support elements (18) which receive the thrust of the spring, with the support elements under compression, when the two case parts (1, 2) are assembled, so releasing the plastics retaining arms (7) from the tension due to the biasing force of the spring. The thermostat is suitable for use in the cooling circuit of an internal combustion engine. <IMAGE>
