METHOD FOR PRODUCTION OF TEREPHTHALIC ACID

The method manufactures terephthalic acid while inhibiting methylacetate by-product. Terephthalic acid is prepared continuously by oxidizing p-xylene with molecular oxygen in the presence of catalyst containing cobalt, manganese and bromine at 100-200deg.C and 1-20kg/cm2. Volatile component containing methylacetate(MA) from reactor(1) is supplied to a azeotropic distilling column (2), so acetic acid is recovered from lower part of the column. Water and MA is recovered from top of the column and separeted in a decanter(3). MA is recycled to the reactor via distilling column(4). The temp. of lower part of the column keeps 80-100deg.C and that of top of the column 50-70deg.C.
