Plastics container assembly machine

[Also in Division B5] In a machine for joining generally cylindrical open-ended plastics container shells 13 to bottom portions 14, the shells 13 are carried along a conveyer belt 20 and are transferred by means of a wheel 93 on to pedestals 28 of assemblies 29 which are radially spaced on a rotary table 17 and which each have a gluing mechanism 18 associated with and above them. Each pedestal is surrounded by a tube 34 attached to a disc 35 and as the table 17 rotates each tube is moved upwardly by a roller 38 which moves on the upper surface 37a of a cam member 37 so that the top edge 34a of each tube engages the shell on the corresponding pedestal. This raising of the shell actuates the gluing mechanism 18 and at the same time the disc 35 engages a fixed belt 44 and begins to rotate together with the tube 34 so that glue is applied all around the inside top edge of the shell 13. The machine is arranged so that, if no shell is delivered to a pedestal the gluing mechanism associated with that pedestal is not rendered effective, even though the tube 34 rotates. The shells 13 are then delivered off the table 17 back on to the conveyer belt 20 by a wheel 94 and are carried to another wheel 110 (Fig. 1, not shown) which delivers them on to assembly means 125 radially spaced on a rotary table 19 and each having a similar construction and action to the assembly 29. Similarly, the bottom portions 14 are carried upside-down, along a conveyor belt 22 and delivered by a wheel 109 to further assembly means 1251. As the table 19 then rotates the two assembly means are brought together by rollers 127, 1271 which move along cam tracks and the shells 13 and bottom portions 14 are thus sealed together. Finally, the finished article is transferred back on to conveyer belt 20 by a wheel 166.
