An apparatus (10) for determining the load bearing capacity of soil and the soil type, includes a weight (18) which can be repeatedly dropped from a fixed height to drive a probe (42) into the ground using one or more driving rods (26), the degree of penetration providing a measure of the load bearing capacity. The probe (42) includes a ratchet (40) which enables the rods (26, 34) to be engaged with the probe for clockwise rotation and disengaged from the probe for anti-clockwise rotation. The skin friction on the probe, which gives an indication of soil type, is the difference between the torque resistances determined with the probe engaged and disengaged. <IMAGE> |
