PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display device which is capable of dealing with high-definition display of a large number of scanning lines with a simple matrix system and a larger screen and has high light utilization efficiency particularly with a reflection type. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display element having two metastable states dependently on impressed voltage waveforms is obtd. by the constitution in which the pretilt angles of respective boundaries attain a relation of opposite signs by nearly aligning the angle formed by the rubbing directions applied on two sheets of substrates 5 and the twist angle (phir) of the liquid crystal molecules in an initial state. The two states are made optically identifiable with one sheet of a polarizing plate by incorporating dichromatic dyestuff to a liquid crystal layer so that the layer functions as a display element with a simple structure. |
