Monitoring surface quality of automobile transmission gear wheel

The method records signals detected by a radial probe(3) fed from a high frequency current source. The gear wheel(1) turns around its axis (X) at a constant speed and the end of the probe is maintained in sliding contact against the toothed surface(2) of the gear wheel(1). The recorded signals resulting from the interaction of Foucault currents with machining faults, are digitised then processed by statistical methods which permits evaluation of the surface quality by comparison with a standard gear wheel sample.
