The method involves determining the geological structural characteristics of a material (3), contained in a certain vol. ahead of a gallery-boring installation (1). Equipment (7) having emitter (8), receiver (9) and analysis (10) devices is provided. The emitter or receiver are placed within the material, pref. at a predetermined distance (D), in front of the face (6) cut by the installation. The other of the emitter and receiver is placed at the cutting face. The emitter emits a source signal (8A) which penetrates the material and is received as a return signal (9A) by the receiver after passage through the material. The analyser analyses the transmitted signal. Operating together, the three devices determine the characteristics of the material located between the emitter and receiver.
