Rectifier substations in which the main thyristor is extinguished by means of an extinguishing and load device are known. To ensure the undisturbed running of railways, the current must be guided into a switching branch when the thyristor in the rectifier of the substation is switched off. An extinguishable switching branch is achieved in that switching currents that flow from the busbar (20) to the line portion outputs (a1, a2) and from the line portion outputs (a1, a2) to the busbar (20) are led through a switching thyristor (12) that may be extinguished by the available extinguishing and loading device. An uncoupling diode (17) allows short extinguishing current paths to be achieved and the main thyristor (2) remains erasable even when all line portion outputs switches (1a, 12) are switched off. This extinguishable switching branch represents an economic design of a rectifier substation with central thyristor switch.
