The wind sensor (10) in a tapered plastic housing (12) on the roof incorporates a vertical-axis wind turbine (14) driving a pulse generator. In the base of the housing a ferrite rod antenna (16) parallel to the sloping wall is wired to a demodulator (18). Time signals from a long-wave transmitter are received and decoded. The control can be taken over by one or more photocells (20) on an upper horizontal segment which can rotate independently about the vertical axis.
