Process for continuous casting of metal strands, esp. of steel, in vertical or horizontal withdrawal plants, wherein the melt level in the mould is continuously monitored by a measuring system and maintained constant by a semi-automatic or fully automatic control system, which adjusts the metal flow from a tundish to the mould by variation of the outlet area and maintains a constant melt level in the mould by continuous matching of the strand withdrawal speed. Process equipment is also claimed. The tundish outlet area is altered by a hydraulically or mechanically operated stopper or slide gate. The withdrawal speed varies within two preset limits and where it exceeds or falls below the limits a correction is made by the outlet operating control.
