The heat exchanger (100) comprises a vertical housing (1) containing a bundle (50) of mutually parallel tubes (30) extending between a lower (10) and an upper (20) tube base and through which passes hot process gas which enters at the inlet (4) and is discharged through the outlet (9). The heat from the process gas is transmitted at the outer periphery of the tubes (30) to a fluid coolant, e.g. air, which enters the housing (1) at the inlet (17) and is discharged through the outlet (24). The highest temperatures in the tubes (30) are in the region of the lower tube base which, for this reason, takes the form of a boiling water-cooled double tube base (10).
