In extracting aluminium, magnesium or a metal of Group 4A of Mendeleefs Periodic Table, e.g. titanium, zirconium, by fusion electrolyses of their double halides at bath temperatures below the melting point of the metal, materials are added to the melt to reduce its viscosity and the temperature of the melt in at least a part of the space between the electrodes is increased above that of the remainder of the melt. One or both of the anode or cathode may be heated, e.g. by using hollow internally heated electrodes, and the bath additives may be silica gel, gelatin, an organic sulphonic acid or an organometallic compound such as a metal alkyl.
