Apparatus for bending wide sheets comprises a table for supporting a sheet to be bent, means for releasably clamping the sheet on to the support table, a displaceable bending beam for bending the sheet and having distributed therealong and co-operating therewith a plurality of mechanisms each comprising a pair of hingedly connected rods and spring means co-operating therewith, one of the rods being lengthwise displaceably mounted on the support table and the other rod being lengthwise displaceably mounted on the bending beam. Sheet to be bent is clamped to a table 2 by a rail 6 urged downwardly by lever-actuated toggle means 7, 10, 5 or by hydraulic means. That part of the sheet projecting beyond the rail 6 is bent up over the rail 6 by a bending beam 11 rocked upwardly about the bending edge of the rail 6. The beam 11 is mounted in bearings at the end of the machine and has means R spaced therealong which hold the beam 11 against the sheet as it is bent. The means R each comprise a pair of rods 13, 14 parallel to and carried by the beam 11 and table 2 respectively, hinged together at 12 and surrounded by springs 15, 16 acting between adjustable units 17, 18 on the rods and guide abutments on the beam 11 and table 2 respectively. |
