An insert 20 for use in a container such as a bottle has a deformable portion, e.g. a thin wall portion (9, figure 1) or walls made of resilient material, so that in its non-deformed state it is too large to pass through an opening of the container yet in its deformed state it can pass through the opening, (figure 4). The insert cannot be accidentally dispensed with the contents. The insert may have two duckbill valves 28, 29, the upper valve 28 allowing gas from the container headspace to pass into and pressurise the insert as it floats on the beverage and the lower valve 29 providing a restricted orifice through which fluid is jetted into the liquid, in response to pressure changes occurring on opening of the container, to form a head on the beverage. The insert may comprise two parts snap fitted or welded together, a protrusion (8, figure 1) surrounding the valve to protect it from damage at the time of insertion of the insert into the container. The insert may include a weighted wall portion (5, figure 1) to orientate the insert so that the restricted orifice is submerged in the beverage. Alternatively, the insert may be pre-charged, e. g. with a component to mix with the container contents, before introduction into the container and may include a closure arranged to be permanently opened on being subjected to a high temperature or pressure, e.g. obtained during pasteurisation. <IMAGE>
