PURPOSE:To produce an omega-alkylthioalkyl isothiocyanate useful as a perfumery raw material in high yield by a safe and industrially operable method by reacting an easily producible omega-alkenyl isothiocyanate with an alkyl mercaptan. CONSTITUTION:This omega-alkylthioalkyl isothiocyanate of formula III is produced by reacting an omega-alkylthioalkyl isothiocyanate of formula I (n is an integer of 2-6) with an alkyl mercaptan of formula II (R is a 1-4C alkyl). The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a radical initiator to accelerate the reaction. The free radical initiator is e.g. t-butyl hydroperoxide, benzoyl peroxide and azobisisobutyronitrile. The omega-alkenyl isothiocyanate to be used as a starting compound in the reaction is easily producible by reacting an alkenyl halide with a thiocyanic acid salt in an inert solvent and isomerizing the obtained alkenyl thiocyanate by heating in a polar aprotic solvent. |
