The aspiration and irrigation system (90) has a pressure device (15) for maintaining the intraocular pressure of the eye, a pair of infusion devices (20,25) an irrigation device (35) and an aspiration device (45). A fluid medium supply line between the first infusion device and the irrigation device incorporates a container (26) associated with the second infusion device, the container coupled to a gas supply line (17) coupled to the pressure device. A switching valve (18) allows the intraocular pressure to be regulated via the gas or fluid medium.
