Fig. 1, is provided with a drive arrangement for individually operating each printing unit of the machine, relatively phasing said units A, B, C for successively printing sheets fed through all said units, and causing all the units to phasedly and synchronously operate, said arrangement including a compound transmission shaft 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>11</SP> arranged to mechanically connect all the units in one given phase relationship. Each shaft section is connected by gearing 13 to the rotary components 10 of the respective unit. The drive comprises a main motor 11 for driving the transmission shaft 12 and auxiliary motors 15 for driving the rotary components of the other units B and C, mechanical coupling means 14 for connecting each shaft section to another shaft section when the units A, B and C are in said given relationship, and actuator means 16 connected to said coupling means for actuating same and mechanically intercqnnecting said units on attainment of said given relationship. A typical coupling unit 14 is depicted in Fig, 2 and comprises a disc-like component 20 driven through the shaft section 12 at a certain speed by the motor 11 and provided with an eccentric bore 22, a facing disc-like component 21 driven at a slightly lower speed by a motor 15 and provided with a corresponding bore 23, and a connecting pin 24 slidably arranged in the bore 22 and adapted to be moved axially into the bore 23 by the means 16 on attainment of the given angular relationship of the shaft sections. The means 16 includes a double-acting pneumatic piston and cylinder device 28 connected to the pin 24 by a bell-crank, lever 27 and a grooved sleeve 25 arranged to slide on the shaft section 12. When two units are required to be interconnected cams 18 of relative position signalling devices 17 activate contactors so that pressure is applied to the right-hand side of the cylinder unit 28 and when the bores 22 and 23 are aligned the pin 24 couples the adjacent units. The circuitry of Fig. 4 (not shown) provides a switch for either phased operation of the units A, B, C or for the individual running of each unit. A relay is provided to activate a warning lamp if the units are coupled when not properly phased and a further lamp is provided to indicate when the apparatus is ready for operation. Marks such as 71, Fig. 2, may be provided on the cams 18 and marks 71<SP>1</SP> and 71<SP>1</SP>a on the components 21 and 20 to facilitate manual coupling of the units.</p>
